Observation Narrative
This plot captures the center of a deep depression with steep sides. The pond is a small feature of 0.12 ha, and at least one more pond feature is in the immediate area (see plot GPNF044). Stones are scattered on the ground surface and leaf litter covers approximately 40% of the pond with other areas vegetated by graminoid species with a few individuals of Cephalanthus occidentalis. Dead plant material of the floating, aquatic herb Torreyochloa pallida, covers areas of the ground. The pond did not have standing water on the survey date, but the soil was wet. The steep sides of the depression and the surrounding upland flat are forested with Oak / Heath Forest. The recorded "Canopy Height" is the height of the single tree in the plot.
Soil sampled from center of pond
0->1 cm thin leaf litter
1-25 cm dark brown clay loam with coarse sand
25+cm light gray sandy clay with sparse orange mottles
